Devotional Text:
Genesis 22:13-14 (NLT) 13 Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14 Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the LORD will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
Devotional Thought:
How did Abraham know “the Lord [would] provide” a ram as an offering in place of his son? Faith is trust but not without assurances (cf. Heb. 11:1). Because of Abraham’s close walk with God he could remember the way the Lord had led and provided for him before. Faith is lived day-to-day, moment-by-moment but God’s work in our lives must be carried forward in our hearts and minds in order to shape us into people of faith. Abraham trusted God’s faithfulness which enabled him to follow the Lord’s instruction. This unfolding story demonstrates God’s providential care and provision for us when we live by faith and depend on God more than we depend on ourselves (cf. Pro. 3:5-6). “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
