Devotional Text:
Ruth 1:16-17 (NLT)
16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go;
wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
17 Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD punish me severely if
I allow anything but death to separate us!”
Devotional Thought:
Ruth’s statement of love and devotion is not only to her mother-in-law, Naomi, but also to the
God of Israel that Naomi had taught her to love. She was willing to leave her family, homeland,
and “gods” in order to worship and serve the true and living God! Ruth’s statement of devotion
is often held up as exemplary. Jesus says this kind of love is necessary in the face of life’s
choices if we will truly be his disciples (Matt. 10:37-39).
